Gryphon soccer men take two from Algoma Thunderbirds

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons completed their OUA men’s soccer league regular season with wins over the Algoma Thunderbirds Friday and Saturday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Gryphs needed late goals in both games for the win.

Leo Shrimpton hit in stoppage time Friday for a 2-1 victory while the Gryphs scored all three of their goals in the final 14 minutes going against the wind Saturday.

Friday, Dante Ruddock scored in the 19th minute for the Gryphs, but Noah Zeppa tied it for Algoma in the 15th minute of the second half.

Ambrose Tinmouth set up Shrimpton for the winning goal.

The Gryphs outshot Algoma 13-3 (10-3 in shots on target) and took eight of the game’s nine corner kicks. The Thunderbirds were whistled for 13 fouls, seven more than the Gryphs. Algoma was also shown the yellow card three times, two times more than Guelph.

Saturday, Gray Yates opened the scoring in the 77th minute while Osayuki Ibie scored eight minutes later and Vahan Sargsyan, who set up Yates for his goal, added the final goal a minute after Ibie’s goal.

The Gryphs outshot the Thunderbirds 14-1 (11-1 in shots on target) and took all 14 corner kicks taken in the game. The Thunderbirds were called for nine fouls and the Gryphs for eight.

Gryphon shutouts were recorded by Carter Robart Friday and Leighton Jull Saturday.

The Gryphs finish tied for third in the West Division with 7-4-1 records. McMaster wins the tiebreaker due to a 1-0 win over the Gryphs Oct. 7 at Hamilton.

The Gryphs are to host the Western Mustangs, fifth at 4-2-6, in a divisional quarter-final Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
