Gryphon soccer women grab first win with first-half goals

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons struck for a pair of goals in the first half as they recorded their first victory of the OUA women’s soccer season Friday at Waterloo Warriors Field.

Those goals stood up for a 2-0 win for the Gryphs over the host Warriors.

Olivia Rizakos opened the scoring in the 28th minute while Christina Gomes added the other goal in the 45th minute.

Sabrino Spano stopped seven shots for the clean sheet.

The Gryphs carried the play in the opening half, outshooting their hosts 11-4. The Warriors had three shots in the second half while Guelph had one to give the Gryphs a 12-7 advantage in the game.

Guelph also took seven of the game’s nine corner kicks while Waterloo was assessed five fouls, one more than the Gryphs.

The result leaves Guelph tied with the Western Mustangs for fourth in the West Division at 1-1-1. Waterloo Warriors are sixth at 1-3-0.

The Gryphs and Warriors are to meet again Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Game time is 1 p.m.
