Gryphon soccer women rally for deadlock with York

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons rallied twice from single-goal deficits to battle the York Lions to a 2-2 standoff in OUA women’s soccer play Friday at York Lions Stadium.

The teams scored a goal apiece in each half, York netting the first goal of each half.

Olivia Brown pulled the Gryphs even with her second goal of the season, scoring in the final minute before halftime.

Christina Gomes, who recently had winning goals in back-to-back games, scored the final tying goal of the game as she scored her fourth of the season with less than six minutes to go in regulation time.

Brooke Morton and Brown each had an assist.

Erica Di Matteo scored both goals for York, her first two goals of the season. Assists went to Maia Torelli and Dylana Makarowski.

The Gryphs outshot the Lions 9-5 and took all seven corner kicks taken in the match. The whistle also sounded eight times for Gryphon fouls and five times for York fouls.

The tie leaves the Gryphs at 5-2-2 and York at 2-4-4.

The Gryphs are to host the Laurier Golden Hawks (4-3-2) Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
