Gryphon soccer women rally to tie Western

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons picked up their first point of the OUA women’s soccer season Sunday as they battled the Western Mustangs to a 2-2 standoff at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Mustangs had taken the season opener for both teams 1-0 on Labour Day Monday at Western.

At home Sunday, the Gryphs scored the opening and closing goals of the game.

Kathleen Kimens started the scoring for the Gryphs when she tallied in the 11th minute. Anna Bernardi picked up the assist, the only assist awarded in the game.

Reese Fowler in the 14th minute and Gabby Kohut in the 25th minute gave the visitors a 2-1 lead before halftime.

Violet Hipkin came back with the tying goal for the Gryphs in the 67th minute.

While both teams took seven corner kicks, Western outshot Guelph 13-7 including an 8-4 advantage on shots on target.

The Gryphs were called for five fouls to Western’s two.

The Gryphs are to play the Waterloo Warriors (1-2-0) twice this week as they’re to play Friday at 6 p.m. at Waterloo’s Warrior Field and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
