Gryphon soccer women repeat performance against Windsor

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons liked the script they used to defeat the Windsor Lancers in OUA women’s soccer play Friday night so much they dusted it off and used it again Sunday.

The Gryphs netted a pair of goals in the second half to edge the Lancers 2-1 at Windsor’s Alumni Stadium Sunday afternoon. As was the case two days earlier, Christina Gomes collected the winning goal.

This time the first half was scoreless – Windsor had scored in the opening half at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Friday night. The Lancers waited until the eighth minute of the second half to net the opening goal, Avery Comartin tallying with help from Kailyn Robertson.

Kathleen Kimens pulled the Gryphs even just under six minutes later. Gomes picked up the assist on that goal.

Gomes then struck for the game-winner with just over 10 minutes left in regulation time. Her winner Friday came in the final minute of regulation time.

The Gryphs outshot the Lancers 17-10 including an 8-4 advantage in shots on net. They also took four corner kicks, one more than their hosts, and they were called for 12 fouls, twice as many as Windsor.

Sabrina Spano was in goal for Guelph while Jordan Samping was in net for Windsor.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Gryphs and it was also the sixth consecutive game in which they scored two goals.

With the victory the Gryphs leapfrog the Lancers in the standings as Guelph sits third in the West Division at 5-1-1 while Windsor is fourth at 4-3-1. McMaster Marauders lead at 6-1-2 and Western Mustangs are second at 6-1-1-. Following Windsor are the Laurier Golden Hawks (3-2-2), York Lions (2-4-3), Brock Badgers (2-3-2), Waterloo Warriors (2-6-0) and Algoma Thunderbirds (0-9-0).

The Gryphs are to play the Marauders at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m.
