Gryphon soccer women score twice again, get another win

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons extended their undefeated streak in OUA women’s soccer to five games as they slipped by the Windsor Lancers 2-1 Friday evening at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Gryphons and that string of wins followed a tie. The Gryphs scored twice in all five games of the unbeaten streak.

Friday, the Gryphs netted both of their goals in the second half after Windsor had scored the lone goal of the first half.

Olivia Stavropoulos tied the score for Guelph in the third minute of the second half while Christina Gomes hit for the winner in the final minute of regulation time.

Kailyn Robertson had scored in the 20th minute for the visitors.

Sabrina Spano was in net for the Gryphs while Jordan Samping was in net for Windsor.

The Gryphs outshot the Lancers 9-6 including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The Gryphs also took five of the seven corner kicks in the game and Windsor was called for six fouls – all in the first half – to five on the Gryphs.

The result leaves the two teams tied for third in the West Division with 13 points apiece. However, the Gryphs (4-1-1) have a game in hand on Windsor (4-2-1). McMaster Marauders (6-0-2) lead the division while the Western Mustangs (5-1-1) are second. Laurier Golden Hawks (3-2-2) are fifth and are followed by the Waterloo Warriors (2-5-0), York Lions (1-4-3), Brock Badgers (0-3-2) and Algoma Thunderbirds (0-7-0).

The Gryphs and Windsor are to play again Sunday at 1 p.m. at Windsor’s Alumni Stadium.
