Gryphon volleyball men drop two to McMaster

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their first two losses of the OUA men’s volleyball season as they were twice defeated 3-0 by the McMaster Marauders at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre on the weekend.

McMaster won 25-21, 25-21, 25-22 Saturday and 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 Friday.

Saturday, Jacob Bailey had eight kills and four blocks for the Gryphs while Cameron Chadwick had seven kills and three aces and Jonathan Pickett had six kills and three blocks. Thomas Pugsley had 21 assists and six digs and Jacob Schweyer had five digs.

Friday, Pickett had 13 kills while Schweyer had six kills. Pugsley had 17 assists and three digs and Chadwick had four digs.

Brendan Mills had 30 kills, five blocks and seven digs in the two matches combined for McMaster while Maxime Gratton had 19 kills, three aces and 10 digs and Haben Yohannes had nine kills. Robbie Fujisawa had 67 assists and 10 digs while Tyler Pavelic had 11 kills and five blocks and Brady Patterson had six kills, four blocks and nine digs.

In the two matches, the Gryphs had 55 kills, eight aces, 10 blocks, 43 assists, 35 digs and a .155 kill percentage while McMaster had 75 kills, five aces, 12 blocks, 72 assists, 48 digs and a .338 kill percentage.

The Queen’s Gaels (7-1) and Gryphs (7-2) top the league standings while McMaster, Brock Badgers and Windsor Lancers are each at 6-2.

Next up for the Gryphs is their first match of 2024 as they’re to host the Toronto Varsity Blues (2-3) Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. at the GGAC.
