Gryphon volleyball men slip by York Lions

TORONTO – The league-leading Guelph Gryphons made it two wins in as many days as they slipped by the York Lions 3-2 in OUA men’s volleyball play Friday night at York’s Tait McKenzie Centre.

After York squeezed out a 25-23 win in the first set, the Gryphs came back with 25-19 and 25-22 set wins before the host Lions forced the match to its five-set maximum with a 25-17 victory in the fourth set. Guelph won the fifth set 15-9.

Jonathan Pickett led the Gryphs with 14 kills and three assists while Alexander Odle had nine kills and an ace. Joshua Glasbergen had nine kills and two blocks while Thomas Pugsley had an ace, 36 assists and 10 digs, Nathan Peters had an ace and two blocks, Cameron Chadwick had two blocks, five assists and eight digs and Daniel Pickett had 10 digs.

Alex Dorling had 15 kills for York while Dennis Cota had five aces, Dan Lafleur had three blocks, Jasraj Nijjar had 41 assists and Robert Kemp had 13 digs.

The Gryphs had 48 kills, three aces, 10 blocks, 46 assists, 47 digs and a .208 kill percentage while York had 54 kills, six aces, seven blocks, 53 assists, 49 digs and a .143 kill percentage.

Guelph leads the 13-team league at 9-2 while York is 11th at 1-6. Queen’s Gaels (7-1) and McMaster Marauders (7-2) are tied for second while Windsor Lancers are fourth at 6-3.

The Gryphs are to play the RMC Paladins (12th at 0-7) in Kingston on back-to-back days next weekend. They’re to play Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. at RMC’s SAM Gymnasium.
