Gryphon volleyball women come back for another 3-2 win

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons struck for three consecutive set wins to come back to edge the York Lions 3-2 in OUA women’s volleyball play Friday night at York’s Tait McKenzie Centre.

The win was the second in as many days for the Gryphs who edged the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 at the Gryphon Centre Thursday night.

York took the first two sets 25-18, 25-20 before the Gryphs responded with 25-15, 25-17 and 15-12 in the deciding set.

Briar Crerar had 19 kills, two assists and 13 digs for the Gryphs while Nikina Bear-Lowen had 10 kills, four aces and a block. Mia Miskovic had eight kills, two aces, two blocks and eight digs while Alexa Shields had two aces, a block and 43 assists, Hailey Holland had two assists and Sydney Simonson had eight digs.

Amarai Endes had 10 kills and seven blocks for York while Kianna Drewniak had 10 kills, Ella Rohani had four aces, Megan McDonald had 38 assists and Jessica Reynolds had 22 digs.

The Gryphs had 56 kills, nine aces, three blocks, 51 assists, 60 digs and a .191 kill percentage while York had 46 kills, 10 aces, 11 blocks, 45 assists, 54 digs and a .184 kill percentage.

The Gryphs are tied for second in the 14-team league at 7-2. McMaster Marauders, the only team to have beaten the Gryphs in league play this season, lead at 8-1 while the Brock Badgers and Queen’s Gaels are both at 7-1. York is 11th at 1-7.

The Gryphs have a pair of matches against the RMC Paladins (tied for 12th at 0-6) next weekend in Kingston. They’re to meet Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. at RMC’s SAM Gymnasium.
