Gryphon volleyball women drop close one in preseason play

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons were edged 3-2 by the Western Mustangs in OUA women’s volleyball preseason play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Mustangs won 25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 25-27, 15-11.

The game was a close one throughout and that could be seen in its statistics.

The Gryphs had 54 kills, nine aces, nine blocks, 48 assists and 44 digs.

The Mustangs had 56 kills, 12 aces, 13 blocks, 44 assists and 43 digs.

Briar Crerar had 15 kills and 14 digs for the Gryphs while Leah Stewart had nine kills and two aces. Alexa Shields had four aces, 42 assists and six digs while Samantha Ingleton had seven kills and three blocks, Mia Miskovic had two blocks, Sydney Simonson had four assists and Payton King had six digs.

Category leaders for Western were Devin Gerth with 20 kills and five aces, Claire Stewart and Ava Ebert with five blocks apiece, Thea Ishida with 24 assists and Kylie Maxwell with 12 digs.

The result leaves the Gryphs 4-3 in their preseason. They have two games left in their preseason, both on the road, before they’re to host the Lakehead Thunderwolves to open the regular season Nov. 10 and 11 at the GGAC.

The Gryphs are to play preseason games against the Waterloo Warriors at Waterloo Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. and against the Brock Badgers at Brock Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
