Gryphon women blank Bold for 2nd straight shutout win

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons recorded their eighth consecutive victory in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday when they posted their second straight shutout win at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs blanked the Toronto Metropolitan Bold 2-0 with single goals in the first and third periods.

Sophie Helfenstein had 10 saves for the shutout, her second of her rookie season.

Vanessa Bueti scored the opening goal early in the first period and assisted on a shorthanded goal by Tiana Faccio late in the third period. Faccio and Rylee Davison assisted on Bueti’s goal.

The Gryphs fired 36 shots on the TMU net guarded by Lauren Griffin and outshot the Bold 27-5 after the first period.

Neither team scored on their power play, the Gryphs having eight and the Bold having five.

The Gryphs have a comfortable 16-point lead in the West Division with a 14-2-2-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record. Three points are awarded for a win in regulation time, two for a win in overtime or a shootout and one for a loss in overtime or a shootout.

TMU is sixth in the East Division at 3-0-2-14.

The fifth-ranked Gryphs are to play the Western Mustangs twice this week as they’re to play the Mustangs at Western’s Thompson Arena Thursday at 7 p.m. and host the Mustangs Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
