Gryphon women bounce back with win over Nipissing

NORTH BAY – The Guelph Gryphons put an end to their two-game losing streak as they downed the Nipissing Lakers 85-51 in OUA women’s basketball play Friday at Nipissing’s Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.

The Gryphs won each quarter to take the win. They led 21-10 at the end of the first quarter, 41-28 at halftime and 69-40 at the end of the third quarter.

Guelph had five players reach double digits in scoring as Rain Jhaj had 23 points with Julia Colavecchia netting 12 and Renee Armstrong, Hannah Bourdon and Trinity Papamandjaris collecting 11 apiece. Bourdon had eight rebounds while Colavecchia had four assists, Lucy Tesseyman had two blocks and Jhaj had eight steals.

Taryn Gauthier led Nipissing with 14 points while Sophie Milner netted 10. Megan Mccarter had 17 rebounds, Gauthier had four assists and three steals and Lucy Lafrance had the lone block for the Lakers.

The Gryphs shot 43 percent on field goals, 45 percent on three-pointers and 82 percent on free throws. They also grabbed 31 rebounds, had 19 assists, six blocks and 20 steals, committed 19 turnovers, had 22 points in the paint, 32 points off Nipissing turnovers, 14 second-chance points and received 38 points from their bench.

The Lakers shot 30 percent on field goals, 21 percent on three-pointers and 92 percent (11 of 12) on free throws and had 35 rebounds, 12 assists, one block, 12 steals, 32 turnovers, 14 points in the paint, 14 points off Gryphon turnovers, two second-chance points and 14 points from their bench.
