Gryphon women complete sweep with another 3-0 win

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons completed a two-game sweep of the Windsor Lancers in OUA women’s hockey quarter-final playoff action Friday as they recorded their second 3-0 victory in three days.

The Gryphs took the opening game of the best-of-three series by that score Wednesday at the Gryphon Centre.

Guelph scored a pair of goals just under four minutes apart in the second period Friday and added an empty-netter with 4:08 to go in the third period to complete the scoring.

Maeve Sutherland-Case, Maya Graham and Hannah Tait had a goal apiece for the Gryphs while Teghan MacRae and Brielle Caruso each had an assist.

Guelph outshot Windsor 31-20 and kept the Lancers scoreless on four power plays. For the second game in a row, the Gryphs didn’t have a power-play opportunity.

Martina Fedel, who picked up a minor penalty in the third period for body checking, had 20 saves for the shutout for the Gryphs.

Kristen Swiatoschik had 28 saves for Windsor.

The Gryphs, ranked third in the country, advance to the best-of-three semifinals where they’re to face the winner of a series between the Toronto Varsity Blues and Queen’s Gaels.

The York Lions upset the Nipissing Lakers, seventh ranked in the country, in the quarter-finals with 1-0 (in overtime) and 6-1 wins. The Lions will play the winner of a series between the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks.

The Gryphs will have home-ice advantage in their series that is expected to start Wednesday at the Gryphon Centre.
