Gryphon women double up Ontario Tech Ridgebacks

OSHAWA – The Guelph Gryphons grabbed a two-goal lead in the first quarter and that proved to be the difference in their 4-2 OUA women’s hockey victory over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks Saturday at Ontario Tech’s Campus Ice Centre.

Hannah Tait scored two goals for the Gryphs including an empty-netter with one second to go in the game. Jayden Calder and Teghan MacRae added single goals while assists went to MacRae, Tiana Faccio, Jessica Kouleas, Rylee Davison and Calder.

Emily Davis-Tope and Julianne Davidson scored for the hosts while Lauren Beaulieu and Kayla Welk each had an assist.

The Gryphs led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second.

Guelph outshot Ontario Tech 39-24 including a 13-4 advantage in the first quarter. The Ridgebacks were 1-for-5 on their power play while Guelph was scoreless on three power plays.

Sophie Helfenstein had 22 saves for the Gryphs while Jalyn St. Louis had 35 for Ontario Tech.

Guelph leads the West Division at 12-2-2-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) while Ontario Tech is fourth in the East Division at 4-2-2-9.

The Gryphs are to host the Brock Badgers (fifth in West at 6-0-3-7) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre and Toronto Metropolitan Bold (sixth in East at 3-0-2-11) there Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
