Gryphon women drop Laurentian, playoffs next

SUDBURY – The Guelph Gryphons completed their OUA women’s basketball season with a 91-69 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs Saturday at Laurentian’s Ben Avery Gymnasium.

The Gryphs grabbed the lead for good eight seconds into the match when they hit a pair of free throws. Guelph led 24-18 at the end of the first quarter, 55-41 at halftime and 72-55 after the third quarter.

Trinity Papamandjaris led the Gryphs with 22 points while Hannah Bourdon had 18, Renee Armstrong had 13, Julia Colavecchia had 11 and Alexis Wright had 10. Armstrong had six rebounds, a block and eight steals while Bourdon had five rebounds and Colavecchia had five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Wright had six assists and five steals and Papamandjaris had four steals. Keryl Ousey also had a block.

Claudia Pellerin had 22 points, six rebounds, a block and a steal while Emilie Lafond had 17 points, six rebounds, two assists and a block. Lauren Robertson-Mar had six rebounds.

The Gryphs shot 43 percent on field goals, 31 percent on three-pointers and 74 percent on free throws. They also grabbed 32 rebounds, had 14 assists, two blocks and 24 steals, committed 12 turnovers, had 34 points in the paint, 36 points off Laurentian turnovers, 11 second-chance points and received 17 points from their bench.

The Voyageurs shot 41 percent on field goals, 28 percent on three-pointers and 79 percent on free throws and had 40 rebounds, nine assists, two blocks, four steals, 33 turnovers, 14 points in the paint, seven points off Gryphon turnovers, 10 second-chance points and 21 points from their bench.

The Gryphs and Waterloo Warriors finished tied for first in the OUA West with 15-7 records. Waterloo won the tiebreaker thanks to beating the Gryphs by seven points Nov. 8 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Guelph won by five points three days later at Waterloo.

By winning that tiebreaker, the Warriors get a bye in the opening round of the playoffs Wednesday and will host a league quarter-final Saturday.

The Gryphs are to host the Windsor Lancers (11-11) Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the GGAC in the opening round. Other opening-round games have the Laurier Golden Hawks (13-9) playing the McMaster Marauders (15-7) at Hamilton, Western Mustangs (11-11) playing the Toronto Metropolitan Bold (16-6) at Toronto and Laurentian (6-16) playing the Ottawa Gee-Gees (18-4) at Ottawa.

Carleton Ravens (21-1), Queen’s Gaels (18-4), Brock Badgers (17-5) and Waterloo are to host quarter-finals Saturday.

The semifinals are to be played Feb. 28 while the Critelli Cup championship match is to be played March 2.
