Gryphon women hand Lakers defeat at home

NORTH BAY – The Guelph Gryphons won two consecutive sets to down the Nipissing Lakers 3-1 in OUA women’s volleyball play Friday at Nipissing’s Robert J. Surtees Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs won the first set 25-23 before the Lakers claimed a 25-11 victory in the second set. The Gryphs responded with 25-17 and 25-22 set wins to take the match.

Mia Miskovic had 9 kills, 7 blocks and an ace for the Gryphs while Briar Crerar had 11 kills and 9 digs and Leah Stewart collected 5 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces and 8 digs. Hailey Holland had 7 kills, 2 blocks and 2 assists while Alexa Shields had an ace, 33 assists and 13 digs, Payton King had 2 assists and 6 digs and Maia Dan had 2 assists and 5 digs.

Owen Paige had 14 kills, 2 aces and 10 digs for Nipissing while Amy Connelly had 2 aces, Jaden Germann had 4 blocks, Logan Garvey had 31 assists and Oceane Raymond-Leduc had 10 digs.

The Gryphs had 42 kills, 5 aces, 11 blocks, 42 assists, 50 digs and a .149 kill percentage while Nipissing had 43 kills, 7 aces, 10 blocks, 43 assists, 52 digs and a .128 kill percentage.

The Gryphs improve to 12-3 with the win while Nipissing falls to 6-9.

The teams are to meet again Saturday at Nipissing. Game time is 4 p.m.
