Gryphon women top Brock to keep winning streak going

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons extended their winning streak to 14 games as they defeated the Brock Badgers 3-1 in OUA women’s hockey play Thursday at the Canada Games arena.

The Gryphs, ranked second in the country, yielded a goal to their hosts 67 seconds into the game, but had it tied 50 seconds after that.

The winning goal came later in the first before the Gryphs completed the scoring early in the third.

Jessica Kouleas, Hannah Tait and Maya Graham had a goal apiece for Guelph while assists went to Vanessa Bueti, Brielle Caruso, Tori Verbeek and Katherine Heard.

Madelyn Walsh tallied for Brock while an assist went to Rayna Franklin.

The Gryphs outshot the Badgers 27-20 and there were no power-play goals in the game. Guelph had three power plays and Brock had four.

Sophie Helfenstein had 19 saves for the Gryphs while Kenzie Harmison had 24 for Brock.

The Gryphs lead the OUA West at 19-3-2-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) while Waterloo Warriors are second at 14-3-2-7, Laurier Golden Hawks third at 8-3-3-11, Windsor Lancers fourth at 8-1-5-11, Brock fifth at 8-1-4-12 and Western Mustangs sixth at 6-4-3-12.

The win was the 22nd of the regular season for the Gryphs, an all-time single-season team record.

The Gryphs could build on that as they have three games left in their regular season. They’re to play Western at London Saturday at 7 p.m. before completing the regular season with 7:30 p.m. home games against Windsor at the Gryphon Centre Feb. 16 and 17.
