Gryphon women turn on power play to edge Western

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons ran their win streak to nine games Thursday as they edged the Western Mustangs 3-2 in OUA women’s hockey play at Western’s Thompson Arena Thursday.

The Gryphs scored three power-play goals in the first 13 minutes of the game and rode them to the victory.

Western scored a minute and a half after the third goal for the Gryphs and cut the gap to a single goal with a shorthanded marker in the seventh minute of the third.

Reese Coffey, Hannah Tait and Katherine Heard hit for a goal apiece for the Gryphs while Chihiro Suzuki assisted on two of the goals. Single assists went to Maya Graham, Heard and Tait.

Adeline Kristoff scored both goals for Western while Alyssa Wouda, Elizabeth Gauthier and Kennedy Ward each had an assist.

The Gryphs outshot Western 38-21 and went 3-for-5 on their power play while the Mustangs were scoreless on three power plays.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 15-2-2-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and Western at 5-4-3-7.

The Gryphs are to host the Mustangs Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
