Gryphons blank Windsor to start playoffs

GUELPH – A pair of third-period goals helped the Guelph Gryphons top the Windsor Lancers 3-0 in OUA women’s hockey league quarter-final playoff action Wednesday at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs scored the lone goal of the first period before a scoreless second. They added to their lead with goals in the second and final minute of the third.

Hannah Tait opened and closed the scoring for Guelph, her second goal being a shorthanded marker, while Maeve Sutherland-Case scored the other goal. Getting one assist apiece were Jaime Magoffin, Tori Verbeek, Jayden Calder, Teghan MacRae, Sydnie Miller and Brielle Caruso.

Martina Fedel stopped 20 shots to get the shutout while Kristen Swiatoschik had 32 saves for Windsor.

The Gryphs never had a power play in the game while Windsor was scoreless on two third-period power plays.

The game was the first of a best-of-three series. Second game is to go in Windsor Friday while the third game is to be played Sunday at the Gryphon Centre if it’s needed.
