Gryphons drop Carleton with hat trick from Verbeek

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons made it two wins in as many OUA women’s hockey preseason play Friday night as they tripled the Carleton Ravens 6-2 in their preseason home opener at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs shot ahead with three goals in the second period.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before the Gryphs went ahead 4-1 by the end of the second.

Tori Verbeek sparked the Gryphs with a hat trick while Sydnie Miller, Maya Graham and Katie Dance added single goals. Chihiro Suzuki, Rylee Davison and Hannah Tait had two assists apiece.

Sophie Heffenstein picked up the win in net for the Gryphs.

Sydney Berta and Hayden Serniuk had a goal apiece for Carleton while assists went to Anya Misher and Meora Ryan.

The Gryphs outshot Carleton 22-16 and went 1-for-5 on their power play while the Ravens were scoreless on three power plays.

Guelph opened its preseason with a 4-2 win over Toronto Metropolitan Bold last Saturday in Toronto.

The Gryphs and Ravens won’t play each other in the regular season as Carleton and the Ottawa Gee-Gees compete in the Quebec league along with three Montreal teams – Concordia Stingers, McGill Martlets and Montreal Carabins – and the Bishop’s Gaiters.

The Gryphs are to play the York Lions at Toronto today (Sept. 16) at 2:15 p.m. The Lions dropped their preseason opener 7-4 to the Toronto Varsity Blues Thursday.
