Gryphons handed another 3-0 loss by TMU Bold

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their fourth consecutive 3-0 setback as they completed their OUA women’s volleyball league’s regular season with a loss to the Toronto Metropolitan Bold Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Bold won 25-14, 25-14, 25-21.

Leah Stewart had eight kills and eight digs for the Gryphs while Samantha Ingleton had five kills and three blocks and Hailey Holland had five kills and two blocks. Maia Dan had three aces, two blocks and five digs and Alexandra Nicholson-Clarke had an ace, Alexa Shields had seven digs and 20 assists, Sarah McNames had four digs and Sydney Simonson had three digs and three assists.

Topping the categories for TMU were Lauren Veltman with nine kills, Mikayla Sherriffs with five aces, Ashley Ditchfield with three blocks, Mary Rioflorido with 13 digs and Sarah Zonnefeld with 25 assists.

The Gryphs finished with 29 kills, four aces, five blocks, 27 assists, 34 digs and a .073 kill percentage while TMU had 34 kills, 12 aces, five blocks, 32 assists, 38 digs and a .264 kill percentage.

The Gryphs finish sixth in the final standings at 12-8, but enter the playoffs on a five-match losing streak.

Brock Badgers and Queen’s Gaels both finish at 18-2 while McMaster Marauders and TMU were both at 15-5 and Toronto Varsity Blues finish at 13-7. Trailing the Gryphs are the Nipissing Lakers at 11-9, Waterloo Warriors at 10-10, Western Mustangs at 9-11, Windsor Lancers and York Lions both at 6-14, Lakehead Thunderwolves at 4-16, Trent Excalibur at 2-18 and RMC Paladins at 1-19.

The Gryphs are to play McMaster at Hamilton Saturday at 6 p.m. in the quarter-finals.
