Gryphons topped by TMU’s quick pair in second

GUELPH – Two goals in a span of less than a minute and a half in the second period proved to be the difference in the game as the Guelph Gryphons were doubled 4-2 by the Toronto Metropolitan Bold in OUA men’s hockey play Friday night at the Gryphon Centre.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and also scored once apiece in the third.

However, TMU struck for two second-period goals 1:22 apart that gave the visitors a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Ian Ferguson had opened the scoring for the Gryphs at 16:29 of the opening frame with help from Jacob Winterton and Jaxon Camp.

Giordano Biondi added an unassisted goal at 4:01 of the third for Guelph’s other goal. It cut the score to 3-2 in TMU’s favour.

Kyle Bollers hit for an empty-netter for the Bold with 1:23 to go in the third. Connor Bowie, Kevin Gursoy and Ian Martin scored the other goals for the visitors while Chris Playfair, Daniil Grigorev and Bollers each had an assist.

The Gryphs were outshot 48-33, although they outshot the Bold 15-10 in the third period. Tanner Wickware had 44 saves for Guelph and Kai Edmonds had 31 for TMU.

The Gryphs were scoreless on five power plays while TMU went 1-for-3 on its power play.

The result leaves Guelph 6-5-0 in league play and TMU 6-3-0.

The Gryphs are to host the Toronto Varsity Blues (9-3-0) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
