Gryphs yield three in third in loss to division leaders

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons gave up three unanswered goals in the third period as they suffered a 5-3 loss to the West Division-leading Brock Badgers in OUA men’s hockey play Saturday at the Canada Games arena.

A pair of goals 64 seconds apart late in the second period gave Guelph a 3-2 lead heading into the third period despite being outshot 25-11 at the time. Brock scored the lone goal of the first.

Jacob Winterton, Duncan Penman and Liam Ham scored the goals for the Gryphs while assists went to Tristan De Jong, Nathan Allenson, Ham, Ethan Doyle, Luke Bignell and Nolan DeGurse.

Tyler Burnie scored two of the third-period goals for Brock including the eventual game-winner with 9:34 to go. Justin Brack, Jacob Roach and Cole Tymkin scored the other goals while Roach also had three assists. Jonah Boria, Ryan Stepien, Tymkin and Zach Taylor each had an assist.

The Badgers outshot the Gryphs 34-19, but were scoreless on three power plays while Guelph went 1-for-3 on its power play.

Brendan Cregan had 29 saves for the Gryphs while Connor Ungar had 16 for Brock.

Guelph is sixth in the OUA West at 9-11-0 while Brock is first at 15-5-0.

The Gryphs are to host the UQTR Patriotes (first in OUA East at 14-5-0) Friday at the Gryphon Centre in the first of four consecutive home games that includes the annual Frosty Mug Game Jan. 18 at the Sleeman Centre. This year’s opponent will be the Lakehead Thunderwolves (fifth in OUA West at 9-9-1). Both of those home games have 7:30 p.m. game times.
