Guelph Gryphons run over by Windsor Lancers

WINDSOR – Guelph Gryphons’ young quarterbacks struggled and Windsor Lancers’ rushing game flourished as the Gryphons suffered their first loss of the OUA football season Sunday night at Windsor’s Alumni Field.

Freshmen quarterbacks Marshall McCray and Tristan Aboud were held to a combined seven completions to match the number of times they were sacked in a 41-18 loss to the Lancers.

The hosts averaged a first down every time they ran the ball as they had an average of 10.2 yards a carry. That number was inflated by a 75-yard touchdown run by Liam Talbot that helped make him one of four Lancers to run for at least 80 yards. Weabge Mombo had 130 yards on nine carries, Joey Zorn had 111 yards on 12 carries, Christopher John had 83 yards on 17 carries and Talbot had 80 yards on two carries.

The ground game for the hosts collected 488 of their 679 yards of total offence. They had 31 first downs with 22 of them coming via the rush. The Gryphs had 12 first downs, 191 yards rushing and 246 yards of total offence.

The locals did have a 100-yard rusher as Donavin Milloy gained 119 on nine carries and McCray gained 70 on five carries. They each scored a touchdown.

The Gryphs fell behind early and never recovered. They gave up a TD less than four minutes into the game and trailed 9-0 at the end of the first quarter, 17-1 at halftime and 32-4 after three quarters.

Both TDs for Guelph came in the fourth quarter as McCray found the endzone on a 16-yard run midway through the quarter and Milloy broke free for a 75-yard TD run. McCray scored a two-point convert on Milloy’s touchdown while Ben Lane had the other points for the Gryphs as he kicked a rouge and a 27-yard field goal.

Colby Ginn (five-yard pass from Danny Skelton), John (one-yard run), Talbot and Javonni Cunningham (four-yard pass from Skelton) accounted for Windsor’s TDs. Brady Lidster kicked field goals of 47 and 16 yards, four converts and a rouge while James Parker also had two rouges. The Lancers also had two team safeties.

McCray completed three of six pass attempts for 55 yards while Tristan Aboud was good on four of 11 pass attempts for 36 yards. Aboud was sacked five times, McCray twice and McCray tossed the game’s lone interception.

Vyshonne Janusas hauled down three passes for 49 yards while Kaine Stevenson (27 yards), Milloy (10 yards) and Evan Spangenberg (5 yards) each had one catch.

Cunningham caught six passes for 60 yards while Daniel Thrasher had four catches for 60 yards.

Miles La Foucade had 10 solo tackles for the Gryphs while Nathaniel Slawter had five solo tackles and two assisted tackles and Malcolm James had six solo tackles. Joshua Campbell had Guelph’s lone sack.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 1-1 and Windsor at 2-0.

The Gryphs are to host the Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday at Alumni Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.

Laurier is 2-0 following a 20-15 win over the Carleton Ravens in Waterloo Sunday.

Other games Sunday saw Waterloo Warriors drop York Lions 53-32 at Waterloo, Ottawa Gee-Gees slip by Toronto Varsity Blues 15-10 at Toronto and Western Mustangs defeat McMaster Marauders 34-22 at London.

Western, Windsor, Ottawa and Laurier are all 2-0 while the Gryphs and Waterloo are both at 1-1. Queen’s Gaels and Carleton are both 0-1 while McMaster, Toronto and York are each at 0-2.
