Guelph Regals fade in overtime loss to London Blue Devils

The Guelph Regals squandered a four-goal lead to fall 10-9 in overtime to the London Blue Devils Thursday night at London’s Earl Nichols Arena.

The Regals led 7-3 at the end of the second period, but London hit for six consecutive goals to go ahead by a pair of goals with 1:09 to play in regulation time. The Guelph side responded with two goals 23 seconds apart in the final minute of the third period to force the extra time.

Guelph had led 3-2 at the end of the first period.

Cannon Schmidt and Zachary Wright had two goals apiece for the Regals while single goals were added by Nate Long, Troy MacDonald, Darcy Rybinsi, Auguste Toscan and Damien Ramirez. Toscan had three assists while Ben Morton had two and Schmidt, Kyle Beecraft, Tyson Weinstein, Kaden Vanoordt, Brayden Driscoll, Ramirez, Sawyer Smith and Wright had one apiece.

Tyler Clarke and Buzz Doxtator had two goals and three assists apiece for London while Taylor Low, Liam Turner, Cohen Smith, Jamie Desilva, Daxtyn Brown and Nate Doxtator added the other goals. Carson Langille collected five assists while Brown had three and Anthony Gartly, Turner, Andrew Boyko and Cole Nieman each had one.

The Regals outshot the Blue Devils 73-54 and had two power-play goals while their hosts had three power-play goals.

Anthony Fonte had 44 saves in the Guelph net and Finley Topping had 64 for London.

The game was the first of three consecutive road games for the Regals. They’re to play the Point Edward Pacers at the Point Edward Arena Friday at 8 p.m. and the Six Nations Rebels at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville May 22 at 8 p.m.
