Guelph Regals fall to Windsor in overtime

WINDSOR – The Guelph Regals surrendered the final three goals of the game as they were edged 12-11 in overtime by the Windsor Clippers in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Sunday at the Forest Glade Arena.

The Regals and Clippers traded the lead throughout the match as Windsor led 4-3 at the end of the first period and the Regals led 10-9 after the second.

Guelph’s largest lead of the game was two goals, a margin they led by twice at 7-5 six minutes into the second period and 11-9 with eight minutes to go in the third.

The Clippers also led by two twice – 4-2 with a minute to go in the first period and 5-3 three minutes into the second.

Grady Holmes scored the winner for Windsor at 6:05 of overtime after the Clippers had forced the extra time with two goals in the final 7:17 of regulation time, the second of those two goals coming with 1:17 to play.

Marcus Keleher struck for a hat trick for the Regals while Owen Orpana tallied twice. Netting single goals were Dylan Goddard, Sam MacDonald, Parker Lock, Cam Wheeldon, Ethan Keleher and Zachary Wright. Orpana collected three assists while MacDonald and Wright had two apiece and goalkeeper Ty Fox-Trudel, Kyle Beecraft, Dylan Davey, Lock, Ethan Keleher and Marcus Keleher each had one.

Connor McManus and Xander Derkatz scored three times apiece for Windsor while Malikye Good and Max Frattaroli each fired home two goals. Single goals were added by Kane Murphy and Holmes while Frattaroli had six assists and Derkatz had four. Holmes picked up three assists while goalkeeper Griffin Salaris, Good, Quinn Brennan, Niko Spewock, McManus and Kaden Ducharme each had one.

Windsor outshot Guelph 61-48 and went 2-for-5 on its power play while the Regals were scoreless on both of their power plays.

Fox-Trudel had 49 saves for Guelph while Salaris had 37 for Windsor.

The Regals are tied for third in the Western Conference with the Hamilton Bengals, but the Bengals have a game in hand. Six Nations Rebels lead the conference at 9-0-0 and are followed by the Elora Mohawks (7-1-0), Hamilton (6-2-0), Regals (6-3-0), Windsor (5-2-0), St. Catharines Athletics (4-1-0), Cambridge Highlanders (4-3-0), Owen Sound Northstars (1-5-0), London Blue Devils (1-5-0), Wallaceburg Red Devils (1-6-0), Point Edward Pacers (0-8-0) and Welland Generals (0-8-0).

The Regals are to host Hamilton Friday at 8 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena.
