Guelph Regals pull away from Cambridge Highlanders
The Guelph Regals scored three more goals than their host Cambridge Highlanders in a pair of periods Friday night at the Galt Arena to post a 10-4 victory.
The Regals led 3-0 at the end of the first period despite being outshot 22-12 in the frame and they were up 5-2 at the end of the second. Both teams doubled third scoring outputs in the third.
Ben Morton led the Regals with three goals and four assists while the other goals were scored by Cannon Schmidt, Gage Thompson, Troy MacDonald, Bowen Downey, Brayden Driscoll, Carter MacKay and Simon Labelle. Schmidt and Thompson each had three assists while Downey had two and Eli Blakeley, Nikolas Dabic, Kaden Vanoordt, Darcy Rybinski and Driscoll each had one.
Kaelen Smith was involved in all four Cambridge goals as he finished with two goals and two assists. Carter Whissell and Brody McGivern added a goal apiece while Andrew Loeffen had two assists and David Deveau and McGivern had one each.
The Highlanders outshot the Regals 52-43. Dane Dickinson had 48 saves for Guelph while Mason Jacobs had 10 for Cambridge before being replaced by Fionn Kelly at 3:32 of the second period following Guelph’s fifth goal. Kelly finished with 23 saves during his stint in net.
The win was Guelph’s second in a row following a 13-7 loss to the Six Nations Rebels May 22 at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville. They also beat the London Blue Devils 12-4 at the Victoria Road arena Sunday.
The Regals are to play the Windsor Clippers at Windsor’s Forest Glade Arena Saturday at 7 p.m. and host the St. Catharines Athletics Monday at 8 p.m.
