Guelph Regals surprise Six Nations with victory in overtime

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals became the first team to defeat the Six Nations Rebels this Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League season Sunday when they edged the visitors 8-7 in overtime in Western Conference semifinal playoff action at the Victoria Road Arena.

Six Nations had won its previous 24 league games – 20 in the regular season and four in the playoffs – this season.

The Regals never led in the game until the final second of the first period and they never trailed after that, although Six Nations pulled even three times.

Guelph led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 5-3 after the second and the score was tied 7-7 at the end of regulation time.

Charlie Boon’s second goal of the game, this one at 2:02 of overtime, proved to be the winner for the Regals. His first goal with one second to go in the first period put the Regals up 2-1.

Marcus Keleher connected for a hat trick for the Regals while Owen Orpana also scored twice and Dylan Goddard had the other goal. Goaltender Ty Fox-Trudel, Goddard and Brett Vince each had two assists while Logan Reyes, Trent Gilbert, Marcus Visentin, Ethan Keleher, Orpana and Marcus Keleher each had one.

Damon Doxtatar struck for a hat trick for Six Nations while Connley Joe Squire scored twice and Cole Powless and Rakawineh Elijah fired home single goals. Anahilis Doxtador collected four assists while single assists were awarded to Squire, Colby Martin and Doxtatar.

The Regals outshot the Rebels 55-46, but were scoreless on eight power plays while Six Nations went 3-for-7 with a manpower advantage. The Regals did score two shorthanded goals.

Fox-Trudel had 39 saves for Guelph while Wesler Carew had 47 for Six Nations.

The result leaves the best-of-five series knotted 1-1. Third game is set for Friday at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville starting at 8 p.m. while Game 4 is to go Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena.

If a fifth game is needed, it’s to be played July 17 at 8 p.m. in Hagersville.
