Guelph Royals clouted by Kitchener Panthers

KITCHENER – The Guelph Royals yielded at least a single run in six innings as they were downed 13-3 by the Kitchener Panthers in Intercounty Baseball League play Sunday afternoon at Jack Couch Park.

The runs by the hosts were scored in six of the first seven innings and included three runs in the first and four runs in the seventh. The Royals scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings.

The Royals clouted 11 hits and had an error in the match.

J.D. Williams hit three singles while Brando Leroux and Jeff MacLeod each hit a double and a single. Tristan Pompey added a double while singles were also hit by Ethan Hammond, Mike Cecchetto and Corey Morro.

Kitchener connected for 16 hits in the game and committed two errors. Elliott Curtis slugged two homers and a single while Andy Leader smacked a double and two singles. Raul Gonzalez hit a homer and a single while Stephen Whalen had a double and a single and Humberto Ruiz and Yunior Ibarra clubbed two singles apiece. Liam Wilson and Jett Jarvis each added a single.

Both teams left 11 runners on base.

Starter Sandy Baez took the loss for the Royals. He yielded six runs, five earned, off eight hits and three walks in four innings. He had a strikeout.

Nelson Mercado gave up three earned runs off five hits and a walk in two innings and he had two strikeouts.

Jorge De la Cruz surrendered four earned runs off two hits and three walks in a third of an inning. Brandon Deans pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and held the Panthers scoreless during his stint. He gave up a hit.

Kitchener starter Christian Hauck was the winning pitcher. He gave up three runs, two earned, off nine hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings. He had five strikeouts.

Adam Robertson (1 2/3 innings), Daniel Marquez (1 inning), Brett Reid (1 inning) and Nathan Laird (1 inning) saw time on the mound for the Panthers. Reid and Laird each surrendered a hit while Marquez and Laird each had two strikeouts.

Kitchener leads the league at 4-1 while the Hamilton Cardinals and Toronto Maple Leafs were each at 4-2. Welland Jackfish were at 3-2 while London Majors followed at 3-3 while the Barrie Baycats are at 2-3, the Royals are at 1-4 and the Brantford Red Sox are at 0-4.

The Royals are to host Brantford Tuesday at Hastings Stadium. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
