A three-run third gave the Royals a 4-2 lead at the time, but the hosts scored a run in the bottom of the inning and pulled even with two runs in the bottom of the sixth after the Royals had scored one in the top of the inning.

Brantford went ahead with a single run in the bottom of the eighth before the Guelph side came back in the ninth, taking advantage of Red Sox pitcher Danny Howatt’s struggles with two out in the inning.

David Mendham, an infielder from Dorchester who finished his NCAA season with Oklahoma State with a seven-game hit streak, was making his first appearance with the Royals after signing on earlier in the week. He doubled to start the inning, but was still on second after the hosts got two consecutive outs.

Then things went off the rails for Brantford as Ethan Hammond doubled Mendham home with the tying run and Brendan Keys singled Hammond home with the winning run. Chris Robinson was hit by a pitch and Kyle Kush was walked to load the bases and bring Howat’s stint to an end.

Kyle Nash relieved and walked J.D. Williams to allow another run to score and Conner Morro was plunked to bring another run home before Mendham grounded out.

Williams hit a triple and single in the game for Guelph while Hammond had a double and a single and Morro hit two singles. Mendham and Kush each hit a double while Malik Collymore, Keys and Robinson each added a single.

Kieran Bowles connected for a double and three singles for Brantford while Christian Kuzemka and Gus Wilson each hit a double and two singles. Matthew Fabian had two singles and Jeremie Veilleux and Jesse Fishbaum each collected a single.

Each team stranded 12 runners in the game.

Darren Shred started in his first appearance for the Royals, and went two innings, giving up two earned runs off two hits and two walks. He had three strikeouts.

Yomar Concepcion relieved and picked up the win, improving his record to 3-4. He allowed four runs, three earned, off 12 hits in seven innings. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out six as he threw 110 pitches, 76 for strikes.

Jeremias Sucre started for Brantford and was tagged for four runs, one earned, off six hits and four walks in five innings. He had five strikeouts.

Aidan Armitage (1 1/3 innings), Howat (2 1/3 innings) and Nash (1/3 inning) also saw time on the mound. The Royals had an earned run off a hit and a walk by Armitage, four earned runs off four hits and two walks by Howat and had a base runner courtesy of a walk by Nash. Howat had two strikeouts and Armitage had one.

The win lifts the Royals to 8-15 while Brantford drops to 4-21. The Royals are seventh and Brantford eighth in the eight-team league.

The Royals are to host the third-place Kitchener Panthers (14-10) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium and Brantford Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
