Guelph Royals cool off after hot start against Hamilton

GUELPH – First impressions can be misleading.

Take Saturday night’s Intercounty Baseball League game between the Guelph Royals and Hamilton Cardinals at Hastings Stadium.

Hamilton Cardinals 14 Guelph Royals 4

When the first six batters of the game for the Guelph Royals reached base – one on a fielder’s choice, two on walks, two on singles and the other one when struck by a pitch – and three of them scored, it appeared as if the Royals would have an easy time of the game.

Wrongo.

Guelph starting pitcher Sandy Baez surrendered nine runs, seven earned, off eight hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings as the Cardinals tied it with three runs in the third and then surged ahead for good with six runs in the fourth.

The Royals, who never made a fielding or batting substitution in the game, were held to a single run in the fifth inning after their quick start to the game. They finished with nine hits and three errors.

Corey Morro had three singles and a stolen base while Kyle Kush hit a double and a single. Noah Roberts also hit a double while Brando Leroux, Ethan Hammond and J.D. Williams each hit a single.

Jared Kennedy relieved Baez and lasted just as long, 3 1/3 innings. He gave up four earned runs off nine walks and a hit. He struck out six, twice as many as Baez.

Ben Reid pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and yielded an earned run off three hits and three walks. He had three strikeouts.

Tyler Duncan knocked in a trio of runs with a pair of homers for Hamilton while Dennis Dei Banning had hit a double and two singles. Clayton Keyes connected for a double and a single while Duncan McLaughlin clouted a triple and Luis Bernardo, Josh Niles, Laine Renaud and Tanner Rempel each smacked a single.

After getting through his rough start, Logan Walters lasted six innings on the mound for Hamilton. He gave up four earned runs off eight hits and four walks in six innings before Alex Lanigan came in to pitch the three scoreless innings, limiting the Royals to a hit and a walk. Walters had five strikeouts and Lanigan, who earned a save, had two.

The result leaves the Royals at 4-9 and Hamilton at 8-6. Welland Jackfish lead at 10-2 and are followed by Toronto Maple Leafs at 9-5, Barrie Baycats at 7-5, Kitchener Panthers at 8-6, Hamilton, London Majors at 4-6, the Royals and the Brantford Red Sox at 2-12.

The Royals are to play the Jackfish in Welland Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
