Guelph Royals down London for third consecutive win

GUELPH – Six runs in the fourth inning sparked the Guelph Royals to their third consecutive win as they handed the London Majors a 9-6 setback in Intercounty Baseball League play Saturday at Hastings Stadium.

After scoring their other three runs in the first inning, the Royals needed their fourth-inning runs as London scored two in the third inning and their other four in the eighth.

The Royals jumped ahead for good in the first inning as Brando Leroux tripled and Ethan Hammond followed with a homer. J.D. Williams was walked before Tony Hrykiw singled him to third and Williams came home on a Jeff MacLeod groundout.

In the fourth, Mike Cecchetto reached base on an error and went to third on a double by Kyle Kush. Darius Barlas singled Cecchetto home and Kush scored on a sacrifice fly by Corey Morro. Brando Leroux was hit by a pitch and Hammond was walked to load the bases. Williams singled to score two of the runs and the other two came in on a double by Tony Hrykiw.

Both teams had nine hits in the game. Guelph’s other hits came in the seventh as Barlas and Morro each hit two-out singles.

Sandy Baez picked up the win as he went five innings for the Royals, holding London to two earned runs off five hits. Liam Watt surrendered a hit in his inning on the mound while Brandon Deans gave up four runs, three earned, in the final three innings off three hits and the only walk issued by the Royals. Baez and Deans each had five strikeouts.

Byron Reichstein, batting second in the London order, hit a homer and a double while leadoff hitter Tommy Reyes-Cruz had a homer and a single. Starling Joseph hit two singles while Daniel Battel, Andrew Lawrence and Will Pollard each hit a single.

Edisson Gonzalez was tagged for nine runs, seven earned, off seven hits and two walks in five innings. Pedro De Los Santos, Braeden Ferrington and Cam O’Reilly each pitched a scoreless inning for the Majors. Ferrington yielded two hits while De Los Santos walked two and O’Reilly walked one. Gonzalez had three strikeouts and De Los Santos had one.

The two teams that met in the special playoff game to decide first place last year are both sporting losing records as the Royals are at 4-7 and the Majors are at 4-6.
