Guelph Royals edged by ProStars in OSL RW play

GUELPH – The Guelph Royals suffered a 1-0 loss to ProStars FC of Brampton in Ontario Soccer League Regional West play Thursday night at the Centennial Bowl.

Noah Stapleton scored the game’s lone goal.

The result leaves the two teams tied for seventh place with nine points apiece in the 10-team league, although the Royals have a game in hand.

The Royals are at 2-5-3 while the ProStars are at 3-8-0.

Clarkson Comets lead the league at 11-3-1 and are followed by Croatia Norval at 10-0-1, North York Academy at 7-2-3, Bradford Wolves at 7-3-0, Wisla United at 6-6-2, Burlington City SC at 5-7-0, the Royals, ProStars, SC Toronto Eagles at 1-7-1 and Orangeville Athletics at 0-11-3.

Brett King leads Guelph scorers this year with six goals while David Stephan has three and Conall Rea, Luka Ainsworth and Michael Ojkic each have two.

Thursday’s game was the start of a busy stretch for the Royals as they’re slated to play five games in 12 days.

The Royals and ProStars are to meet again Sunday at Meadowvale Park in Mississauga. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

The locals are also to host SC Toronto Eagles Tuesday at 9 p.m. at Eastview Park.

They’re to follow that game with a pair of road games – Sept. 15 against North York Academy at York University at 9 p.m. and Sept. 18 against SC Toronto Eagles at Earlscourt Park in Toronto at 7 p.m.
