Guelph Royals fall behind early in loss to Welland

WELLAND – The Guelph Royals surrendered at least a run in each of the first six innings as they were handed a 9-6 setback by the Welland Jackfish in Intercounty Baseball League play Thursday night at the Welland Stadium.

All six of Guelph’s runs came in the ninth inning.

Welland struck for three runs in the first inning, one in the second and two in the third before adding single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to complete their scoring.

In the ninth, Corey Morro got things going when he reached base on an error by Welland second baseman Tyler Dupuis. Ashton Patterson was hit by a pitch and then replaced by pinch runner Brendan Keys. Brando Leroux doubled to score Corey Morro while Keys scored on an Ethan Hammond groundout that sent Leroux to third.

Conner Morro doubled to plate Leroux while, with two out, Noah Roberts reached first on another error by Dupuis that sent Conner Morro to third. Mike Cecchetto added Guelph’s third double of the inning to score Conner Morro and move Roberts to third. Roberts and Cecchetto both scored on a single by Evan Ashe before the Jackfish recorded their game-ending third out of the inning.

The Royals had 11 hits in the game with Cecchetto getting two doubles and a single. Leroux and Conner Morro each hit a double and a single while Hammond had his double. Ashe, Darius Barlas and Patterson each hit a single.

Kyle Thomas started and took the loss for the Royals as he yielded seven runs, six earned, off 10 hits in four innings. He didn’t walk anyone and had three strikeouts.

Sandy Baez pitched two innings and was followed by Yuki Narita and Ben Reid who each pitched an inning. Baez was tagged for two unearned runs off a hit and two walks. He had three strikeouts. Narita walked one of the three batters he faced in the seventh while Reid issued a walk and a hit in the eighth.

Chris Robinson struck for two doubles and a single for Welland while James Smibert hit a double and a single and Brandon Nicholson and Luis Jean each clubbed two singles. Steven Moretto hit a solo homer while Gianfranco Morello and Matteo Porcellato each hit a single.

Jake Harford got the win for the Jackfish as he held the Royals to five hits in five innings. He gave up two walks and struck out five.

Mike Mueller and Brett Lawson each pitched a scoreless inning, Mueller getting a strikeout.

The Royals scored their six runs, two earned, off Chris Boatto who worked the final two innings. He had three strikeouts and yielded six hits.

The result leaves the Royals and Jackfish tied with 1-2 records. They’re scheduled to meet again Saturday at Hastings Stadium in the Royals’ home opener. Game time is 1 p.m.
