Guelph Royals fall to Kitchener in rain-shortened match

GUELPH – The Guelph Royals were defeated by both the rain and the Kitchener Panthers in Intercounty Baseball League play Saturday night at Hastings Stadium.

The game was called with Kitchener ahead 3-1 at the end of the sixth inning due to rain. The game needs to be five innings in duration for it to be an official match – four and a half innings if the home team is ahead.

The final two outs by the Panthers were on Royals trying to steal bases. They had four caught stealing in the match.

The Royals never led in the game. Kitchener scored the opening run in the top of the third while the locals pulled even in the bottom of the inning when Kyle Kush singled, went to third on a double by J.D. Williams and scored on a groundout by Ethan Hammond.

The Panthers went ahead again with a run in the fourth and they added the final run in the sixth.

Williams hit his double while Kush, Malik Collymore, Chris Robinson and Hammond each added singles.

Kitchener had four hits in the game – two singles by Keegan Marsden, a third-inning homer by Marcel Lacasse and a single by Raul Gonzalez.

Hector Yan was tagged with the loss for the Royals. He yielded three runs, two earned, off four hits and three walks. He had seven strikeouts.

Jacob Douglas had the win for Kitchener as he yielded an earned run off five hits and a walk. He had a single strikeout.

Welland Jackfish lead the league at 19-6 and are followed by the Barrie Baycats at 16-7, Kitchener at 15-10, Hamilton Cardinals at 13-11, Toronto Maple Leafs at 13-12, London Majors at 8-13, the Royals at 8-16 and the Brantford Red Sox at 4-21.

The Royals have a pair of games against Brantford as they’re to play Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium and Friday at 8 p.m. at Brantford’s Arnold Anderson Stadium. The Royals are also to host Toronto Saturday at Hastings Stadium starting at 7:30 p.m.
