The two runs in the ninth came off a one-out homer hit by Noel McGarry-Doyle off Guelph reliever Kyle Thomas that followed a double by Josh Cote that opened the inning.

A triple by Canice Ejoh in the sixth inning off Guelph starter Sandy Baez that scored McGarry-Doyle was Barrie’s only other extra-base hit of the game.

The Royals had led 2-0 at the end of the second inning and 6-4 after the sixth when the teams scored four runs apiece in that inning. Barrie tied it with two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Royals went ahead with a single run in the bottom of the inning.

Baez gave up three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings off five hits and two walks. Thomas pitched the remainder of the game and was tagged for five runs, two earned, off six hits. He didn’t walk anyone and had two strikeouts while Baez fanned three.

McGarry-Doyle hit his homer and a single for Barrie while Adam Odd, Royce Ando and Victor Plaz each had two singles. Ejoh had his triple and Cote had a double while Owen Jansen hit a single.

Barrie starter Jeifry Nunez, who pitched for the Royals last season, gave up two earned runs off two hits and four walks before giving way to Evan Soules for 2 1/3 innings. He surrendered four earned runs off five hits and a walk while Brad Greiveson yielded an earned run off four hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings. Brandon Hillier kept the Royals hitless in the ninth.

The Barrie pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts – six by Soules, four each by Nunez and Grieveson and two by Hillier.

The result leaves Barrie at 4-3 and the Royals and Brantford Red Sox tied for seventh in the eight-team league with 1-7 records.

The Royals are to host the Kitchener Panthers (5-2) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium. That’s the make-up game for the match postponed May 20.
