Guelph Royals held to two hits, but nip Toronto in 10th

GUELPH – Only one Guelph Royals batter managed to get a hit against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Intercounty Baseball League play, but that didn’t natter as the Royals edged Toronto 3-2 in an extra inning Saturday night at Hastings Stadium.

Left fielder Chris Robinson hit a double and a single to drive in two runs, but neither was the winning run.

The winning run in the 10th inning came without a hit and put the Royals ahead for the first time in the game.

Extra-innings rule was in effect in the 10th where a team goes to bat with a runner on second base. Noah Roberts was that base runner for the Royals and he went to third as Kyle Kush was thrown out at first after a sacrifice bunt. Roberts scored the winning run as Toronto pitcher Evan Elliott, who came in to pitch the 10th, unleashed a wild pitch.

The Leafs had gone three-up, three-down in the top of the 10th.

Guelph’s other two runs came in the sixth when Robinson’s double knocked in Malik Collymore and Ethan Hammond. Collymore had walked with one out while Hammond hit into a fielder’s choice, the fielder choosing to get Tristan Pompey, who had also walked, out at second.

The Royals left six runners on base in the game while the Leafs stranded 18 as they left the bases loaded twice and left at least one runner on base in all but the ninth inning.

The Leafs scored single runs in the second and fourth innings. They had a total of five hits and had 12 batters walked. They also had 16 batters strike out.

Garrett Takamatsu had a double and single for Toronto while Justin Marra had a double and Jose Vinicio and Dan Marra each hit a single.

Hector Yan started and went four innings for the Royals. He yielded two earned runs off three hits and six walks. He had nine strikeouts.

Darren Shred pitched a scoreless inning, but walked four. He also surrendered a hit and struck out one.

Yan and Shred combined to toss 132 pitches, 62 for strikes.

Yan is 0-3 in his five outings with the Royals this season and has walked 17 in 26 innings. He’s struck out 36. He’s thrown 521 pitches, 305 for strikes, and his two non-decisions were wins over Toronto.

Shred has had two outings this season, both wins for the Royals, and has walked six and struck out four in three innings. He’s thrown 78 pitches, 40 for strikes.

Brandon Deans came in to pitch with no outs and two on in the sixth Saturday. He went the rest of the way (five innings) and picked up the win, keeping the Leafs scoreless while giving up a hit and walking two. He had six strikeouts.

Wilgenis Alvarado started for the Leafs and he gave up two earned runs off two hits and four walks in six innings. He had three strikeouts.

Chris Nagorski pitched a scoreless inning and Dustin Richardson pitched two scoreless innings. Neither gave up a hit or a walk. Nagorski had a strikeout and Richardson had four.

Elliott got one out in his three-pitch outing in the 10th. He threw two strikes and a wild pitch.

The game was the third of the week for the Royals who earlier split a pair of games with the cellar-dwelling Brantford Red Sox. The Royals won 8-4 at Hastings Stadium Tuesday night and lost 12-4 at Brantford’s Arnold Anderson Stadium Friday night.

Welland Jackfish lead the league at 23-6 and are followed by the Barrie Baycats at 17-9, Kitchener Panthers at 17-10, Hamilton Cardinals at 14-13, Toronto at 13-14, the Royals at 10-17, London Majors at 8-16 and Brantford at 6-23.
