Guelph Royals hit for third consecutive victory
The Guelph Royals recovered from an early six-run deficit to post a 14-7 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday night at Toronto’s Dominico Field.
While 13 of Guelph’s runs came after Toronto grabbed a 7-1 lead in the second inning, 11 of the runs came after the fifth inning with four in the sixth, four in the seventh and three in the eighth.
Victor Mascai slugged a two-run homer in the sixth for the Royals while three runs were scored due to a Toronto error in the seventh. Garrett Takamatsu doubled in a pair of runs in the eighth.
The Royals had 14 hits, committed an error and stranded 14 runners while the Leafs had 12 hits, committed two errors and left four on base.
Mascai had a single to go with his homer while Takamatsu hit two doubles. Ryan Dos Santos and Deivis Nadal each had a double and a single while Miguel Hiraldo hit two singles, Andy Leader and Marcos Castillo each hit a double and Ashton Patterson and Matthew Ward each hit a single.
Yasiel Puig clouted a homer, his third, and two singles for Toronto while JJ Dutton had a double and two singles while Spenser Ross hit two singles. Matthew Fabian belted a homer while Matt Brandt, Yordan Manduley and Cooper Tomkinson each had a single.
Starter Edgar Garcia picked up the win for the Royals. He yielded seven runs, six earned, off 12 hits im seven innings while Brandon Deans and Kevin Escorcia each pitched an inning, keeping Toronto hitless and scoreless in those innings. Guelph pitchers didn’t issue a walk in the game. Garcia had seven strikeouts while Deans and Escorcia each had a strikeout.
The Leafs used six pitchers – Nick Veselinovic (4 innings), Kyle Poapst (1 1/3 innings), Rolando Hermida (2/3 inning), Reinaldo DePaula (1 inning), Alex Lanigan (1/3 inning) and Frankie Gulko (1 2/3 innings). Veselinovic yielded three earned runs off seven hits and four walks while Poapst and Hermida each gave up two earned runs off two hits and a walk, DePaula surrendered four unearned runs off a single hit and Lanigan yielded three runs, two earned, off a hit and two walks. Gulko didn’t give up a run, but did yield a hit and a walk. Veselinovic had seven strikeouts while Poapst, Hermida, De Paula and Gulko each had one.
The Royals are to host the London Majors Saturday at 2 p.m. before they’re scheduled to play the Barrie Baycats twice – Sunday at 6:08 p.m. at Barrie’s Athletic Kulture Stadium and Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
