Guelph Royals limit London to four hits, but drop game

LONDON – Three runs in the second inning proved to be the difference in the game as the London Majors handed the Guelph Royals a 4-1 setback in Intercounty Baseball League play Sunday at London’s Labatt Park.

The Majors also scored a run in the sixth inning while the Royals collected their run in the seventh.

The Majors were held to four hits in the game, but they stole five bases including three in the second off Royals starter Hector Yan when Starling Joseph was walked, stole second and scored on a one-out single by Tommy Reyes-Cruz. A single by Austin Wilkie sent Reyes-Cruz to second before Reyes-Cruz and Wilkie both advanced a base on steals. Keith Kandel singled in both runners.

In the seventh, Justin Interisano was walked and he went to second on a one-out single by Chris Robinson. Interisano scored Guelph’s run on a ground-rule double by Kyle Kush.

Kush’s hit was Guelph’s lone extra-base hit of the game. Brando Leroux, Ethan Hammond, Tristan Pompey, Robinson and Brendan Keys each hit a single.

Joseph had a double for London in the eighth inning, the only London hit after second when Reyes-Cruz, Wilkie and Kandel each had a single.

Yan took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. He allowed three earned runs off three hits and two walks and he had 10 strikeouts.

Yuki Narita, Nelson Mercado and Yomar Concepcion each pitched an inning in relief. Narita gave up an earned run and two walks while Concepcion yielded a hit. Narita and Concepcion each had two strikeouts while Mercado had one.

Owen Boon started and went eight innings for the Majors. He surrendered the Guelph earned run off six hits and two walks while Braeden Ferrington walked one in his inning of work. Boon had 11 strikeouts.

Boon lifted his record to 2-2 with the win while Ferrington was awarded a save, his second of the season.

Welland Jackfish lead the league at 18-6 and are followed by the Barrie Baycats at 14-7. Toronto Maple Leafs, Hamilton Cardinals and Kitchener Panthers are tied with identical 13-10 records while London’s at 8-12, the Royals are at 7-14 and the Brantford Red Sox are at 3-20.

The Royals have three games this week as they’re to play the Jackfish at Welland Thursday at 7:25 p.m. and the Red Sox at Brantford Friday at 8 p.m. They’re also to host Kitchener Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
