Guelph Royals outlasted by Hamilton at Hastings Stadium

GUELPH – The Guelph Royals turned in their fourth consecutive double-digit outing in runs scored in Intercounty Baseball League play Saturday night at Hastings Stadium, but it wasn’t enough as they simply ran out of arms in their fourth game in five days.

The Hamilton Cardinals scored five runs in the eighth inning as they outlasted the Royals 13-11.

The Royals looked to be in pretty good shape to record their season-high fourth consecutive win when they scored six runs in the seventh inning, but the visitors shot ahead for good in the top of the eighth.

The hosts collected 14 hits in the game, all singles, but only scored runs in three innings – four runs in the fourth, six in the seventh and one in the eighth. They stranded 10 runners.

Darius Barlas had three hits while J.D. Williams, Kyle Kush and Noah Roberts each had two and Ethan Hammond, Josh Garton, Malik Collymore, Claudio Custodio and Ashton Patterson had one apiece.

Kyle Thomas started for the Royals and went five innings, giving up six runs (five earned) off eight hits and four walks. He had four strikeouts.

Yomar Concepcion also had four strikeouts, but was tagged for seven runs (four earned) off six hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings as he was charged with the loss.

Ben Reid pitched to two batters in the eighth as he replaced Concepcion with two men on. He walked the first and got the second to fly out before Yuki Narita came in for the final 1 1/3 innings. He gave up a single and a pair of unearned runs charged to Concepcion. That was to be the only hit he yielded as he walked two and struck out two in his stint.

Guelph pitchers also plunked four batters.

While the game was the fourth in five days for the Royals, it was also their sixth in eight days. They used 11 pitchers during that stretch with Concepcion making three appearances for a total of 7 2/3 innings. He picked up the win in his previous two outings. Custodio (14 innings), Hector Yan (11 innings), Narita (6 innings), Jared Kennedy (2 innings), Barlas (1 2/3 innings) and Reid (1 1/3 innings) each made two appearances. Getting one appearance apiece were Thomas (5 innings), Darren Shred (2 innings), Nelson Mercado (1 1/3 innings) and Jeff MacLeod (1 inning). Brandon Deans isn’t available as he’s with the Guelph Silvercreeks in the national 22U tournament in Manitoba.

Hamilton had 15 hits Saturday including back-to-back homers by Luis Bernardo and Josh Niles on consecutive pitches tossed by Concepcion in the eighth inning. Tyler Duncan homered earlier in the game.

Leadoff batter Brandon Nicholson had four singles for the Cardinals while Niles had his homer and two singles. Duncan drove in five runs with a homer and a single while Luis Pimentel-Guerrero hit a double and a single and Laine Renaud hit two singles. Bernardo had his homer and Quin Cotton hit a single.

Colby Ring started and went five innings for the Cardinals. He followed to the mound by Alex Lanigan (1 2/3 innings), Stefan Strecker (1 1/3 innings) who collected the win and Nik Cardinal (1 inning) who picked up his first save.

The Royals got to Ring for four earned runs off nine hits and two walks and Lanigan for six runs, four earned, off four hits and three walks. Strecker surrendered an unearned run off a hit and two walks while Cardinal recorded a three-up, three-down ninth. Ring and Lanigan each had three strikeouts while Cardinal had two.

All the pitchers in Saturday’s game combined to throw 389 pitches (195 by the Royals, one more than Hamilton) in a game that was two minutes shy of hitting the four-hour mark.

The result allowed the Cardinals to regain fifth place in the league standings that they’d lost to the Royals a night earlier. The game was also Hamilton’s third in as many days, something the Cardinals have now done six times while it was Guelph’s fourth 3-in-3 this season

Welland Jackfish top the standings at 25-9 while Barrie Baycats are second at 23-10 following a 4-0 win over Welland Saturday. Kitchener Panthers are third at 21-14 and Toronto Maple Leafs fourth at 16-16. Both were idle Saturday. Hamilton is next at 16-19 while the Royals are at 16-20. London Majors are seventh at 12-20 and Brantford Red Sox eighth at 6-27.

The Royals are scheduled to play three more home games before their next road game. They’re to host Barrie Tuesday, Kitchener next Saturday and London Aug. 15 in a game rescheduled from July 8.

The other three games remaining on their schedule are to be played Aug. 16 against the Majors in London at 7:35 p.m., at home against Toronto Aug. 19 and against the Maple Leafs at Toronto’s Christie Pits Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. All the home games have 7:30 p.m. game times.
