Guelph Royals start road swing with setback in Barrie

BARRIE – The Guelph Royals surrendered at least one run in four consecutive innings as they started their stretch of four consecutive Intercounty Baseball League road games with a 9-4 loss to the Barrie Baycats at Vintage Throne Stadium Sunday.

The Royals opened the scoring with a single run in the second inning before Barrie went ahead for good with four runs in the third. The Guelph squad got two runs back in the top of the fourth, but Barrie collected single runs in the bottom of the inning and in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to grab a five-run lead. The teams completed the scoring with a run apiece in the eighth.

The Royals collected eight hits in the game – a double by Ethan Hammond, two singles apiece by Brando Leroux, Malik Collymore and J.D. Williams and a single by Darius Barlas.

Carson Burns hit three singles and stole two bases for Barrie while Adam Odd had a double and a single and Ryan Rijo had two singles. Kyle Maves also hit a double while Canice Ejoh, Starlin Rodriguez, Malik Williams and Hayden Jaco each hit a single.

Hector Yan started and took the loss for the Royals, dropping his record to 0-4. He gave up six earned runs off seven hits and four walks in five innings. He had six strikeouts.

Following on the mound were Jeff MacLeod (1 inning), Nelson Mercado (1 1/3 innings) and Barlas (2/3 of an inning). The Baycats scored two earned runs off MacLeod and one off Mercado. MacLeod and Mercado yielded two hits apiece and Barlas gave up one. MacLeod walked three while Mercado had the lone strikeout registered by Guelph’s relievers.

Evan Soules started and improved to 3-2 for Barrie as he surrendered three runs, two earned, off five hits and two walks in six innings. He had five strikeouts.

Aidan Rossell was tagged for a hit and he had a strikeout in an inning of work while Chris Cox gave up an earned run off a hit and two walks in an inning. He also had a strikeout. The Royals got a hit off Brandon Hillier in his inning on the mound.

The win was the third in as many games (and days) for the Baycats. They started a string of four games in four days with a 6-4 loss to the Royals at home Thursday, then defeated the Brantford Red Sox 14-1 at Brantford Friday and the London Majors 9-4 at home Saturday.

The Royals are sixth in the league at 13-19 while London is seventh at 10-19. With 10 games to go in their regular season, the highest the Royals can finish is second.

Welland Jackfish lead at 24-7 while Barrie is second at 21-10, Kitchener Panthers third at 20-12, Toronto Maple Leafs fourth at 15-14 and Hamilton Cardinals fifth at 15-17. Brantford is eighth at 6-26.

The Royals are to play the Majors at London’s Labatt Park Tuesday at 7:35 p.m., the Panthers at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and the Cardinals at Hamilton’s Bernie Arbour Stadium Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The locals are scheduled to host Hamilton Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
