Guelph Royals strand 12 runners in loss to Welland

WELLAND – Pitchers Yuki Narita and Kyle Thomas of the Guelph Royals combined to hold the Welland Jackfish to five hits, but the Royals couldn’t make the most of their 12 hits as they were handed a 5-3 setback in Intercounty Baseball League play Sunday at the Welland Stadium.

The Royals stranded 12 runners in the game, seven more than Welland, but the locals committed four errors.

The Royals led by a run after 4½ innings, but Welland tied it with a run in the bottom of the fifth and won with two runs in the seventh. Of the Jackfish’s five runs, three were unearned.

Narita started and limited Welland to four hits and three runs, two earned, in six innings. He struck out four, but walked five.

Thomas relieved for a pair of innings and took the loss as he yielded two unearned runs off a single hit and no walks. He had three strikeouts and threw 34 pitches, 25 for strikes.

Guelph’s 12 hits were all singles. Justin Interisano had four of them while Brando Leroux and Noah Roberts had two apiece and Corey Morro, Ethan Hammond and Chris Robinson had one each. Leroux and Robinson each had a stolen base.

Adam Jafine started for Welland and gave up all three Guelph runs, two earned, off eight hits and the only two walks issued by the Jackfish in the game. He had six strikeouts.

Casey Bouillere-Howard (1 inning), winner Chris Boatto (2 innings) and Deivy Mendez (1 inning) also saw time on the mound. Bouillere-Howard surrendered two hits while Mendez, who picked up his league-best fifth save of the season, gave up one. Boatto and Mendez each had two strikeouts and Bouillere-Howard had one.

Tyler Dupuis hit two singles for Welland while Hogan Brown and Matteo Porcellato each hit a double and Sam Cawker hit a single.

The loss was the third in a row for the Royals following their three-game winning streak.

The win, the 11th victory in a row for the Jackfish, keeps Welland in top spot in the league at 11-2. They’re followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs at 10-5, Barrie Baycats at 8-5, Hamilton Cardinals at 9-6, Kitchener Panthers at 8-7, London Majors at 4-8, the Royals at 4-10 and the Brantford Red Sox at 2-13.

The Royals are to host Barrie Tuesday and London Saturday. Both games at Hastings Stadium carry 7:30 p.m. game times. They’re also to play the Panthers at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park Sunday at 5:15 p.m.
