Guelph Royals top Barnstormers for one-sided victory

The Guelph Royals scored at least one run in all but two innings as they downed the expansion Chatham-Kent Barnstormers 13-3 in Intercounty Baseball League play Sunday at Fergie Jenkins Field.

The Royals jumped ahead with a single run in the first inning and led 4-2 after the second and 5-3 after the sixth. The Guelph side pulled away with three runs in the seventh, two in the eighth and three in the ninth.

The Guelph side clouted 17 hits, including six homers – two by Blake Simpson and one each by J.D. Williams, Garrett Takamatsu, Josh Garton and Jeff MacLeod. All other hits were singles – two each by Ryosuke Ohashi, Simpson, Garton and Evan Ashe and one apiece by Takamatsu, David Stanley and Ashton Patterson.

Chatham-Kent had four hits as Seth Strong hit a homer and a double, Lee Kucera hit a double and Anthony Polowick hit a single.

Hector Yan picked up the win on the mound for the Royals. He yielded two earned runs off two hits and five walks in five innings. Yuki Narita surrendered an earned run off one hit and one walk in three innings while Brandon Deans allowed a hit in his lone inning of work. Yan had seven strikeouts, Narita had five and Deans had one.

For the Barnstormers, Kenny Williams yielded eight runs, six earned, off 10 hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings while Brock Whitson gave up a hit in 2/3s of an inning. Catalin Morin gave up two earned runs off three hits and a walk in an inning of work while Corey Saunders also pitched an inning and he surrendered three earned runs off three hits. Morin had Chatham-Kent’s lone strikeout.

The Barnstormers committed three errors in the match while the Royals had two.

The win was the third in as many outings for the Royals.
