Guelph Royals turn on power to drop Kitchener

KITCHENER – The Guelph Royals unleashed a power attack for the first time this Intercounty Baseball League season to back up the pitching of Claudio Custodio as they downed the Kitchener Panthers 12-4 Thursday night at Jack Couch Park.

The Royals clobbered five homers and limited Kitchener to six hits to record their second consecutive road victory. It was also the second consecutive time they’d hit double digits in runs.

The Royals, who scored at least a single run in seven innings, gave an indication of things to come in the first inning. Ethan Hammond, Guelph’s second batter, connected for the first homer of the game, his second of the season being a solo shot that helped stake Guelph to a 2-0 lead. And Custodio struck out two of the three Panthers he faced in the bottom of the inning, throwing 11 pitches.

Kyle Kush added a solo homer in the fourth while Josh Garton hit a two-run shot in the eighth and Chris Robinson and J.D. Williams added solo shots in the ninth.

The Royals collected 14 hits in the game with Malik Collymore hitting a double and two singles. Hammond and Garton each had a homer and a double while Kush had a homer and a single. Williams added his homer and Darius Barlas hit a double.

Raul Gonzalez had a double and a single for Kitchener while Stephen Whalen also hit a double and Andy Leader, Liam Wilson and Yunior Ibarra each hit a single.

Custodio struck out 15 of the 31 batters he faced in his eight-inning stint. He walked one and yielded four runs, three earned.

Ben Reid pitched a scoreless ninth, walking two but holding Kitchener hitless.

Yadian Martinez took the loss for the Panthers. The Kitchener started was tagged for six runs, four earned, off nine hits and three walks in five innings. He had a strikeout.

Brett Reid (2/3 of an inning), Adam Robertson (1/3 of an inning), Daniel Marquez (1 inning) and Liam Devine (2 innings) each saw time on the mound of the hosts. Reid gave up two earned runs off two hits and two walks while Devine surrendered four earned runs off three hits and a walk. Devine had two strikeouts while Reid and Marquez each had one.

The win lifts Guelph’s record to 15-19 while Kitchener falls to 21-14.

Welland Jackfish lead the league at 25-8 while Barrie Baycats are second at 22-10. They’re followed by Kitchener, Toronto Maple Leafs at 16-15, Hamilton Cardinals at 15-18, the Royals, London Majors at 10-20 and Brantford Red Sox at 6-26.
