Guelph Storm connects early for win over Niagara

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm struck for the first three goals of the game as they headed to a 5-2 victory over the Niagara IceDogs in OHL preseason play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The teams added a goal apiece in each of the second and third periods to complete the scoring.

Leo Serlin opened the scoring with an unassisted marker just shy of the game’s two-minute mark while Rowan Topp and Braeden Bowman collected single goals later in the period, Bowman’s power-play marker came with four seconds to go in the stanza.

Max Namestnikov in the second period and Matthew Poitras on the power play in the third completed the scoring for Guelph.

Michael Buchinger and Poitras each had two assists while single helpers went to Gavin Grundner, Vilmer Alriksson, Bowman and Namestnikov.

Zakary Lavoie tallied in the second period for the visitors while William Stewart hit for a shorthanded goal in the third. Both goals were unassisted.

The Storm outshot the IceDogs 33-21 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while holding Niagara scoreless on two power plays. The teams each won 33 faceoffs.

Brayden Gillespie played the entire game in net for the Storm. He had 19 saves.

Owen Flores had 18 saves in the first two periods for Niagara while Charlie Burns had 10 in the third period.

The teams are to meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Fleming Centre in Beamsville.
