Guelph Storm net final three goals for preseason win

AYR – The Guelph Storm collected their first win of the OHL preseason as they defeated the Mississauga Steelheads 5-3 at the North Dumfries Community Centre Sunday.

The Steelheads had nipped the Storm 3-2 in overtime in the preseason opener for both teams Friday at Mississauga.

The Storm scored four goals Sunday including the final three goals of the game to collect the win.

The first period had been a scoreless affair while the teams scored once apiece in the second. A pair of goals 15 seconds apart gave Mississauga a 3-2 lead before the third period was five minutes old as the Storm had scored in the second minute of the period.

Braeden Bowman, Leo Serlin, Vilmer Alriksson, Charlie Paquette and Quinn Beauchesne scored once apiece for the Storm while Parker Snelgrove and Michael Buchinger collected two assists apiece. Single assists were awarded to Matthew Poitras, Zackary Sandhu, Gavin Grundner, Rylan Singh, Serlin and Brayden Hislop.

Porter Martone, Mason Zebeski and William Eggleton tallied for Mississauga while Angus MacDonell, Luke Misa, Lucas Karmiris and Dylan Gordon each had an assist.

The Storm outshot the Steelheads 44-32 and went 1-for-3 on their power play while Mississauga was scoreless on three power plays.

Brayden Gillespie started in goal for the Storm and he yielded a goal on 23 shots in the first two periods. Ethan Kowatsch gave up two goals and had seven saves in the third period.

Ryerson Leenders played the entire game for the Steelheads and he had 39 saves.

Next up for the Storm are a pair of preseason games against the Niagara IceDogs. They’re to play Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Fleming Memorial Arena in Beamsville.
