Guelph Union battles Burlington SC to standoff

GUELPH – A goal with 11 minutes to go in the second half lifted Guelph Union into a 1-1 standoff with Burlington SC in League1 Ontario Women’s Premier soccer play Sunday at Centennial Bowl.

Victoria Hinchliffe scored the goal for the locals.

Burlington had grabbed the early lead with a goal with two minutes left in the opening half. Sienna Caesar scored for the visitors.

The result leaves Union tied for 11th with BVB IA Waterloo in the 19-team league’s standings with identical 6-8-3 records.

With one game to go in their regular season, Union is clinging to the 10th and final position of the teams that will stay in the Premier Division when the division splits next year for the start of promotion/relegation play. Top 10 teams stay in the Premier Division while the bottom nine will go into a second division.

Nine teams are locked into the top division while four teams are still in the battle for that final spot in the top division. Each team’s results from this season and the 2022 season are factored into the promotion/relegation standings with 75% of 2022’s results and 100% of this year’s points considered.

Union is 10th with 39 points and are followed by the Blue Devils of Oakville at 38.25, St. Catharines Roma at 36.75 and Darby FC at 36.25.

Union and Darby have one game to play while the Blue Devils and St. Catharines have two games to play.

Union is to wrap up its regular season Saturday with a game against fifth-place Alliance United FC (9-2-5) at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium. Game time is 6 p.m.
