Guelph Union battles St. Catharines to a standoff

GUELPH – Guelph Union struck with 16 minutes to go in the game to claim a 2-2 tie with St. Catharines Roma Wolves in League1 Ontario Women’s Premier soccer play Sunday at the Centennial Bowl.

The teams scored a goal apiece each half and Union never led.

Sydney VanderHoef scored for Union, her second of the season, in the 25th minute and Justine Rodrigues, with her first of the season, tallied in the 75th minute.

Maia MacLean scored for St. Catharines in the seventh minute and Demi Maroudas scored in the 61st of the season.

The result keeps Union and St. Catharines tied for 14th in the 19-team league with 11 points apiece. Union has a game in hand at 3-6-2 while St. Catharines is at 3-7-2.

The game was the first of three consecutive home games for Union as they’re to host Tecumseh SC (4-5-2) Wednesday at 8 p.m. and league-leading Vaughan Azzurri (9-1-2) Sunday at 5 p.m.
