Guelph Union keeps eyes on staying in L1O’s top division

HAMILTON – Guelph Union kept their hopes of playing in League1 Ontario soccer league’s top women’s division next season when they downed Hamilton United 4-1 on the McMaster University field Saturday.

Union scored twice in each half while Hamilton United’s goal came late in the second half.

L1O’s Women’s Premier league is operating with 19 teams this season and is to split into two when it switches to a relegation/promotion system next year.

Saturday’s win leaves Union 12th with 17 points and a 5-8-2 record. There are four teams tied with 18 points.

Jyanessa Sealy scored her first two goals of the season for Union while Victoria Hinchliffe netted her seventh and Sami Falkenstein added her third.

Emilie Calabrese ruined the shutout bid by Libby Brenneman in the 85th minute with her first of the season.

Union have three games left in their season as they’re to host seventh-place North Mississauga SC (6-3-5) Wednesday at the Centennial Bowl at 8 p.m. and 17th-place Burlington SC (3-9-1) next Sunday (July 16) at the Centennial Bowl at 5 p.m.

They’re to complete their season July 22 with a game against fourth-place Alliance FC (9-2-4) July 22 at 6 p.m. at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium.
