Guelph United FC teams collect win, two losses

Guelph United FC clubs posted a win and two losses in League1 Ontario soccer play Sunday.

The Men’s Premier squad was downed 3-1 by Vaughan Azzurri while the Women’s Premier squad was edged 3-2 by Vaughan Azzurri. The League2 Men blanked Windsor City 3-0.

 

Men’s Premier

Jeronimo Sola’s goal in the 49th minute broke a tie and put Vaughan Azzurri ahead for good.

The goal came three minutes after Gray Yates had tied the score for United.

Raheem Rose’s goal for Azzurri in the 15th minute was the lone goal of the first half while Azzurri’s Christopher Campoli scored the other goal in the 64th minute.

United is to host Burlington SC in their ‘home’ opener Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cambridge’s Oriental Club.

 

Women’s Premier

Nia Fleming-Thompson scored the lone goal of the second half as she tallied in the 74th minute to give Vaughan Azzurri the win.

Sasha Marikano scored United’s goals 11 minutes apart in the 25th and 36th minutes.

Azzurri battled back to tie it by halftime on goals by Flemington-Thompson and Brianne Desa that came five minutes apart. Fleming-Thompson’s first goal of the game came a minute after Guelph’s second goal.

Guelph United is to play Alliance United Saturday at 3 p.m. at Centennial College in Toronto.

 

League2 Men

Kyler Monterroso scored twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation time to secure the win for United.

Christopher Quashair scored the other goal six minutes into the contest.

Anthony Arruda had the clean sheet.

The game was the season opener for both teams.

United is to host St. Catharines Roma Friday at 9 p.m. at Eastview Park.
